In the last three decades, the binary geothermal power plant, based on the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) concept, has become a preferred means of exploiting geothermal resources. Unlike geothermal steam turbine-based systems (such as flash or dry steam), binary geothermal power plants use a working fluid with a low boiling point in a closed-loop system to produce electricity. Until recently it has been widely used in geothermal projects where the resource is brine dominated or to enhance existing flash plants and in many other applications where brine and/or low-pressure steam is available. Over the years, however, the ORC based solutions have been improved and modified to better adapt to various conditions of the heat source including those with high temperature, high enthalpy, and high Non-condensable Gases (NCG) characteristics.
